Qualifying child vs dependent 2022

@lameri correct! 2021 was unique due to the pandemic.

Also, there was no income requirement in 2021, so most everyone received $2000 per child.

in 2022 (and prior to 2021), there is an income requirment to be eligible for CTC

Qualifying child vs dependent 2022

@lameri It seems you were asking about a child over the age of 16, but that was not clear in your original post; and we did not know if the dependent was related to you in some way, or possibly the child of a girlfriend or boyfriend, etc.   That information is important when we are trying to answer questions about dependents.  In some instances, the dependent might be your "qualified child" up to the age of 24; in other situations they might be a "qualified relative";   in still other situations, you might have a "qualified relative" dependent  child who gets you ONLY the $500 credit for other dependents but NOT any other child-related credits like child tax credit, earned income credit or the childcare credit and who is NOT a qualified dependent for you to file as HOH.     It has to do with the child's age AND their relationship to you AND how long they lived with you.   That is why we had to "drill down" on what you were trying to do and who the dependent is.

Qualifying child vs dependent 2022

@xmasbaby0 It seems for that part of the return, it doesn't matter if it's a qualifying child, just if it is under a specific age. That, I think, was my mistake--it was not enough to be a qualifying child, but one under a specific age.
