Get your taxes done using TurboTax
@lameri It seems you were asking about a child over the age of 16, but that was not clear in your original post; and we did not know if the dependent was related to you in some way, or possibly the child of a girlfriend or boyfriend, etc. That information is important when we are trying to answer questions about dependents. In some instances, the dependent might be your "qualified child" up to the age of 24; in other situations they might be a "qualified relative"; in still other situations, you might have a "qualified relative" dependent child who gets you ONLY the $500 credit for other dependents but NOT any other child-related credits like child tax credit, earned income credit or the childcare credit and who is NOT a qualified dependent for you to file as HOH. It has to do with the child's age AND their relationship to you AND how long they lived with you. That is why we had to "drill down" on what you were trying to do and who the dependent is.
