Problem with entering 1099-DIV with 5 countries. Have read "Special Instructions". Program will only take 1 country's data despite all countries listed. What is wrong?

When I trying to enter the Foreign Income for the country with the next largest tax paid (per the Special Instructions), the income field is populated with the largest country's income, and overwriting it changes the income for the largest country.  Either the instructions are not clear, or there is something wrong with the program.

Please clarify your question.

  • Is this a personal tax return?
  • Where did you find the special instructions?
  • Are you referring to box 7 Foreign Tax Paid on form 1099-DIV?

Yes, I am refering to box T, Foreign Tax Paid (FTP).  As for the Special Instructions, I started searching in help on FTP and found a hot link with to the Special Instructions.  Essentially the instructions say that the information on each country has to be entered in descending value of the taxes paid order.  The instructions are not really clear as to what happens when you have two 1099-DIVs with FTP (which I do), but I couldn't get past the first one.

If all of the dividends come from mutual funds, just select RIC for regulated investment company and sum the totals. Otherwise, you will have to enter one at a time. Remember, Form 1116 is only needed for amounts over $300 when reported on dividends.

At the Where Did you Receive Dividend Income screen, you have to enter one country, go through all the questions, come back and enter the next country. Follow these steps:

  1. Receive income from, select a country, continue
  2. Income from foreign countries, will display countries from first screen (but only as added one at a time)
  3. select the country you just added
  4. select add income
  5. Report tax paid, select the income associated with that country, check the box, continue
  6. Enter the foreign tax paid, continue
  7. Do you want to review your entries? select Yes
  8. Enter the next country and repeat the process
