Paying Short Year Tax

Case explained in this example:

Mike has become Legal Permanent Resident of US in October 2019. He would like to file taxes now for 2019, Can he file his taxes for 3 month of 2019 only, ? What is the procedure if he would like to file tax for short year? He doesn't have Form W-2 form his employer.

He should not try to use pay stubs.  They rarely match the W-2.  The employer should have issued a W-2 by the end of January.  Contact the employer to obtain the W-2.

And....you said this tax return is for a U.S. resident---just make sure you should be using TurboTax--if the person in question is a non-resident alien, you cannot use TT.

NON RESIDENT ALIEN

If you are a non-resident alien, your return must be filed on Form 1040NR, which cannot be prepared using TurboTax.  You can use TT’s partner, sprintax:

And....no, you do not reduce the standard deduction.  Get the W-2, enter the income and let the software do all the calculations.

Paying Short Year Tax

What income document if any does "Mike" have for 2019?    An income tax return is for the income received in the tax year--it is not based on which specific months the income was received in.

Thank you for your reply,

He has pay stubs.

I am assuming that he can calculate his gross income for 3 months and and pay his taxes for that period. Do you think he could calculate the deduction like this?  $12,200/12*3 = $3,050
