Not sure how 44 some dollars got tacked onto the 59 dollars deluxe version. Can you tell me how?

The state is an additional 44.99 in all versions above the Free Edition.  To not pay for state you have to delete state.  You can add it back later if you want.

Or you selected to have the fee deducted from your federal refund.  There is an EXTRA 39.99 Pay with Refund charge.  If you are in California it is 44.99.
