I am trying to get a full refund of my NJ state tax.
I paid in $1,597 for the NJ state withholding and the Turbo Tax refund shows $860. Why only $860? Where is the other $737? I need the full amount back and i will pay the PA tax (my resident tax).
Should get full amount back, right?
Was working with a TT tax advisor and they went on hold and then hung up. That is about 4 different hang ups or disconnections this tax season. STrange.

NJ and PA have a reciprocal tax agreement, so NJ taxes should not have been withheld from your pay. But did you have other income in NJ, such as from self-employment, or a rental property?
Yes, i know that.
In the Paychex system, it was set to take out in NJ. So you have to set it to take out withholding in PA.
Anyway, i still dont understand why i am not getting back the full amount. Need to figure out why not. i tried TT live, but the person went on hold and then disconnected. Now no one is calling back. It says 5 minutes, but no call for like 15-20 minutes. Strange. Will it put some of this towards PA or something? Maybe it is giving me back the difference between the PA tax and the NJ tax. PA tax is lower. Not sure. i thought it would do a full refund of NJ and then i would pay the PA separately.
If anyone out there has information please let me know. I am not getting a call back for some reason over the last hour. Need help please.
Ok i figured this out. Had to just keep stepping through the questions and zero out that NJ income.
Only way to get Live help was through the 1 800 number. the button on the site isnt working today.
"Maybe it is giving me back the difference between the PA tax and the NJ tax. "
TurboTax likes to do sums, that cause confusion.
The only number that matters is the refund on your NJ-1040NR tax return.
Review it carefully (print it out).
if you have no NJ income, you get your entire withholding back.
you can get the forms from the NJ website and do this yourself in five minutes.
you won't pay any TurboTax e-File fee.
There is no penalty for filing late since you are getting a refund.
thx, yeah, i figured this out with help of a tax advisor.
I just need to keep going and then zero out the NJ income. I got full amt back. now i am working on PA.
For some reason the tax i owe is now more than the NJ amount was.
I have to mail them the return so i have no choice. It said i have to sign and mail.
Anyway, why does the Turbo Tax instructions say the deadline to postmark is 4/18/22. i thought if it is a refund, that doesnt matter.
I assume they will mail me a check. I usually efile everything.
Got the full refund. then did PA. PA is more because of divs and gains and some interest, etc.
I run into the same situation. The zero out NJ income indeed works. Thanks.
