Hello -
I received a lump sum from social security in 2024, some of which was for tax year 2023. The rest of it was for tax year 2024.
I had a refund of 4660, prior to asking TT to attribute the portion of SS for 2023 to our 2023 AGI.
I wanted to see if we could save on taxes by doing this. TT came up with a much smaller refund.
Now trying to get back to the prior state of my taxes with the 4660 refund.
here's what I entered in the SS section with respect to lump sum received for prior year:
2023 SS amount, my husband's SS in 2023 (I had 0), and the 2023 AGI.
I deleted the above info but not getting back to the original refund.
How do I clear whatever info TT is retaining regarding SS lump sum?
Thanks

If you go back into the Social Security section and start it from the beginning, you will see a summary showing that you entered lump sum information for 2023. That information can be deleted from that summary page by clicking the trash can icon or delete beside it.
If you choose not to include the lump sum information on your 2024 tax return, you should be prepared to file an amended return for the 2023 tax return. The tax impact should be the same by entering the lump sum information on your 2024 return without needing to file the amended return.

What is a lump-sum Social Security payment?
HI,
Thank you for your response, but it is not required to file an amended return for 2023.
I can attribute the portion received in 2024 for 2023 to tax year 2023 (based on 2023 AGI), or base it entirely on 2024 AGI, per my understanding.
You may get a tax savings by looking at it both ways, or not.
How do I see the SS worksheets? I had a SS lump sum for a prior year as mentioned in my prior post, and I'm trying to determine if I can assign the lump sum based on last year's AGI and save on taxes.
Where can I see what TT is calculating? Also where can I find the 2024 1040?
thanks
I'm not sure what you mean by summary sheets. All you need to do if you don't want to amend returns is enter your social security benefits received in prior years, your adjusted gross income and taxable portion of social security. You can get those amounts off of the first page of your Form 1040, in lines 6 (a & b) and line 11.
