My wife doesn't have SSN/ITIN, Can I file for an extension as a single and then get the ITIN in time and finally file jointly later on?

So I got married in 2019, I am on H1B, my wife on H4, she was not qualified for SSN, I didn't have an idea about ITIN earlier. Coming back to the current situation with covid19 and lockdown. I can't get the ITIN timely. It will anyway take a long time. My question is can I file an extension as single and in due course get the ITIN and file jointly finally?

You cannot file your return as single.  If you are married, you can only  file married filing separately or married filing jointly.

Yes you can file a married filing separately return. You probably will not be able to e-file your return as you do not have a SSN or ITIN for your spouse.  If not,, you will need to print and mail your return. Then once your return has been processed by the IRS and you have received your refund or paid your balance due, then you can amend your return for married filing jointly.

If you need to enter a SSN/ITIN for your wife in order to complete your return, you can enter a "dummy" SSN 305-44-0001,  Do not e-file with this number.  You will need to print your return and "white-out" the dummy SSN before mailing your return.  You can enter "Will Apply for " in the space for her SSN on the first page of the return.

You must amend  your return and apply for her ITIN by the due date of the return, including extensions (October 15, 2020).

No need to rush to get an extension.  The Tax Deadline is delayed and automatically extended until 7/15.  Here is an article that provides more details:  Covid-19 Tax Delay

So thanks for the answer, I have another query regarding the Stimulus package.

Few queries related to my own unique situation.

Stimulus package info: (unofficial)

https://www.kiplinger.com/article/spending/T063-C000-S001-stimulus-checks-2020-how-much-when-and-oth...

My unique situation:

* My wife's ITIN is due. (its lockdown for covid19 so I am even scared to go to UPS/FedEx to send the document for that).

* My 2019 filing is pending because of the above since I will have to file jointly to get the benefits of my dependent.

* My 2018 filing was single.
* based on these if I am not able to get ITIN number for my wife in the next 2-3 months I will have to file an Extension.

* The website for the stimulus package is showing that if 2019 filing is due it will pick the returns from 2018 and the calculator show 0$ check for me.

Question:

What should I do to get the ITIN/ filing for 2019 and getting an appropriate stimulus package altogether to get resolved?
