You cannot file your return as single.  If you are married, you can only  file married filing separately or married filing jointly.

 

Yes you can file a married filing separately return. You probably will not be able to e-file your return as you do not have a SSN or ITIN for your spouse.  If not,, you will need to print and mail your return. Then once your return has been processed by the IRS and you have received your refund or paid your balance due, then you can amend your return for married filing jointly.

 

If you need to enter a SSN/ITIN for your wife in order to complete your return, you can enter a "dummy" SSN 305-44-0001,  Do not e-file with this number.  You will need to print your return and "white-out" the dummy SSN before mailing your return.  You can enter "Will Apply for " in the space for her SSN on the first page of the return.

 

You must amend  your return and apply for her ITIN by the due date of the return, including extensions (October 15, 2020).
