My total income (wages and 1099 interest) is below the minimum filing requirement. Do I need to file a return?

After entering my information, I was surprised to find that I owe money despite earning less than $6000.

Without knowing your whole situation, I can suggest that you should look at your entries again to make sure all the entries were entered correctly. You can access your personalized  information in TurboTax, review your entries:

• Open or continue your return.
• Select Federal in the left menu.
• Choose Federal Review.

If you are someone else's dependent, the filing requirements are different.  You will be taxed on interest income in excess of $1,300.  Maybe this is your situation.
