Mailed in my joint 2019 Fed Tax Return. Could not enter my Bank information into IRS website for first stimulus check. Received both first round stimulus checks by snail mail. Received only one stimulus check on second round. Completed 2020 tax return and submitted return electronically. It was rejected due to incorrect AGI. Changed AGI to 0 and it was accepted!
My guess is that they still haven't entered my 2019 taxes into their system.
Yes, @Quasar, you are correct in that the IRS is way behind on this. They just can't keep up! The beginning of this season, I am thinking, is going to take them until after March 15th (which is the Corp due date for year end tax return filings) for them to begin catching up. Even then, it will take a while.
Did entering zero work? I know you stated it was accepted, but were there any other issues down the line?
Did using 0 cause any problems down the road for you? I’m experiencing the same problem and I really don’t want to print and mail my return with an explanation.
As I understand it, the previous years AGI is only used for verification by the IRS. There have been a large number of fraudulent tax filings and the IRS wants to make sure that the correct person is filing the tax return.
Several hours after I filed electronically, I received a text message stating " Great news, ........! Your federal return was accepted by the IRS." I also received an e-mail from TurboTax stating that my return was accepted. Once the return has been accepted by the IRS, the previous years AGI should no longer be needed or used by the IRS as it served its purpose of verifying the tax filer.
This Turbo Tax FAQ will provide information on what to put for your AGI if you didn't file last year or don't have the correct AGI. Incorrect or no AGI
Same here. 2019 Return had to be mailed in last year for same reason - AGI matched and "0" didn't work either. Now 2019 return still not processed (filed timely) and it looks like we have to mail 2020's return as well, since it won't let us e-file for the same reason. What are the odds 2020's return will be processed in time for next year, since we have to mail yet again? The AGI matches, and I've tried "0"; neither works.
IMO, the odds aren't good that this will be fixed next year because TT is still not admitting that this is their bug. HR Block has a similar bug. I used FreeTaxUSA and my rejected return from TT was accepted right away.
The IRS is responsible for accepting/rejecting, but it seems that TT is not transmitting certain information properly.
Awesome, thanks!
I'm with you, Lesley. Who knows if our 2021 tax year submission will work when we file in early 2022. Like you, I'm tired of running to the post office and having to mail via certified mail/return receipt to ensure they are actually received by the IRS. Earlier in this thread, someone from TT insisted this is an IRS problem and not a TT problem.
Turbo Tax must have a glitch because my AGI is correct! Very disappointed in this online tax return!
This is NOT an IRS problem. Both TT and HRBlock have a bug regarding the AGI that causes a faulty transmission to the IRS, resulting in a rejected return. I was a loyal TT customer until I became a victim of this bug. On a whim, I sent the same return through using FreeTaxUSA and was accepted within minutes. My refund was deposited quickly, and I was not charged at all for efiling even though I own a home and a business.
Some people have been successful with TT by entering a zero for last year's AGI or (if filing joint) switching the primary and co-filer, but neither worked for me.
Hi Same problem here I bought Turbo Tax to E File but Turbo has a glitch in it system that cause errors with e file even when the information is correct. Fix the program or refund the fees. Do make excuses and tell people they should use a online program to file by mail. The IRS is taking a long time to process paper returns which is why they suggest people E file. TT support is lacking
If your AGI is not working, try filing with zero instead. Sometimes the database gets reset to zero. You can also get around the question entirely by telling TurboTax that you did not file last year and the AGI question will not come up.
the cause of this in MY case was that I filed an amendment to the 2019 Federal Tax I submitted via Turbo Tax. (the amendment has to be mailed in - you're not able to file an amendment on-line) Because my 2020 Federal Tax submission was being made with the "new" AGI, captured on my 2019 amendment- the IRS system was rejecting it. The IRS was only recognizing the original 2019 AGI on-line submission. Once I corrected the 2019 AGI on my 2020 Federal submission to match first AGI submitted on-line for 2019 tax year, and THEN resubmitted my 2020 Federal submission, it was accepted by the IRS 🙂
