Some TurboTax Online/Desktop customers may be experiencing a rejection error when trying to e-file their state return when their federal return has already been accepted. Click the link and you can sign up for an email update when the issue is resolved. State rejection. Federal return must be submitted
@MaryK4, that link in your post takes me to "We're sorry, we can't find the page you requested."
Is there any update on this issue? Tax Day is approaching. Should I plan to file an extension?
The issue has been resolved, which is why the link is not working.
Please try to file again as it should go through currently. @Rocket J Squirrel
I don't believe this issue is resolved. I haven't tried to e-file yet, but I just got an email:

From: TurboTax Support <[email address removed]>
Subject: We’re still working on State Rejection federal return must be submitted
Dear TurboTax customer,
Thank you for being patient while we investigate your issue.
Rest assured, we're working tirelessly on a solution and will email you when we have more information.
Thank you for being a TurboTax customer.
Sincerely,
TurboTax
I e-filed my son's federal return and it was rejected twice. His name is Jerry Allen. I can't find out why it was rejected. Can you help me?
You received an email that we cannot see that tells you why your tax return was rejected.
Some rejected returns can be fixed and re-filed. Some have “un-fixable” reasons for the rejection and have to be mailed instead. What is the rejection code or rejection message?
If it was rejected for AGI—-be aware that many 2020 returns took so long for the IRS to process that your 2020 AGI might not be in the IRS system. Try using zero instead.
If filing with zero is rejected then file again but select the option that you did not file last year. The IRS does not see that question and it will allow you to e-file with no AGI question.

If that does not work and you still cannot e-file, then print, sign, and mail your tax return.

To access your current or prior year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/
When you sign onto your online account and land on the Tax Home web page, scroll down and click on Add a state.
This will take you back to the 2021 online tax return.
Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen. Then click on Print Center. Then click on Print, save or preview this year's return.
Did the "State Rejection federal return must be submitted" bug ever get fixed? I filed an extension because of this. What's the status? My most recent email from TT on the subject was dated 4/4/22 and says
We haven’t forgotten about State Rejection federal return must be submitted.
We appreciate your continued patience as we tirelessly work on solving your issue.
We’ll email you when we’ve developed a fix.
Still waiting, but maybe a little less patiently. What is going on with respect to this bug?
[tap tap, is this thing on?]
Can anyone update us on the state rejection issue?
I had to pay to file a state tax fee then it wouldnt accept it because the federal was rejected. What does the state return filing have to do with doing the federal tax form? They should be separate. Now I have to mail both returns and my turbo tax state forms say they were submitted electronically which is complete nonsense because they were both rejected. H/R block will get my business next year.
@chris4340 It is not possible to e-file a state return unless the federal return is e-filed and accepted by the IRS. If your federal return was rejected and you did not/could not fix it and re-file that is why both had to be filed by mail.
