Which state are you trying to file in?
You also can try to clear your browser's cache and delete cookies. A full or corrupted cache can keep TurboTax from functioning properly. If that doesn't work, try a different browser such as Safari or Firefox if you're currently using Chrome and vice versa.
Also, if past years follow this year too. IF you've already e-filed the Federal tax return, the state tax return may be locked until the IRS responds with either an "Accepted" or a "Rejected".
1) IF they Reject the previously e-file Fed, then you'll have to fix it, then should be able to e-file both.....going thru review and error checks again would be needed first too.
2) IF they Accept the Fed, only then should you be able to continue to e-file the state...BUT...you should run thru the State review and error check first anyhow.
Is this something specific to the free edition? I've used the paid edition for many years and never had this happen but this is my first year filing free.
No, it is not specific to TurboTax Free Edition. As @SteamTrain mentioned, if you are not able to file your federal and state tax returns together, you then have to wait for the IRS to accept your federal return before coming back to file your state. Please see this TurboTax FAQ for more information: How do I e-file my state after I already filed my federal?
