My returns were rejected due to incorrect EIN number. I have checked and they are correct. What do I do now?

This type of rejection most times occurs when the Employer Identification Number (EIN) differs from what the IRS has in its database.

To correct: Please open your return in TurboTax.

  • In the search box type: W-2
  • click on Jump to W-2
  • On the W-2 summary screen, click Edit next to each W-2 on the return and make sure the EIN in Box b exactly matches what's on your W-2 form. If not, make the correction.
  • Next, make sure the info in the Employer's Name and Address fields match your paper W-2.  If not, make the correction.

If you were able to correct the return with the information above, you can now re-transmit the return.

If you were unable to resolve your issue with the solution provided above, here are your options:

  • Contact your employer to make sure their EIN and name on the W-2 they sent you match.
  • If your W-2 is incorrect, correct the information in TurboTax and re-transmit your return.
  • Ask your employer to send you a corrected W-2 for your records.

If neither of the options above does not work, you can mail in your tax return.  The IRS won't let you e-file a return if the EIN doesn't match what's in their database.

Im trying to see whats wrong and will i still get my stimulus check

My returns were rejected due to incorrect EIN number. I have checked and they are correct. What do I do now?

My returns were rejected saying that my 14-digit state employer ID number was incorrect. I checked with my employer, Granite School District in Utah, and they confirmed that the state employer ID number on my W-2 is correct. They also told me they had many calls from employees who are turbotax users who had the same problem. This means that Turbotax incorrectly singles out as incorrect my particular state employer ID number making it impossible for people working at my employer to e-file using turbotax. I wish there were a way to communicate this to turbotax so that the issue can be resolved. I had to "skip the fix" and choose to print and mail my returns because turbotax would not let me e-file. It was a big hassle and cost me a lot of time on customer support to find out that turbotax is the problem. Please fix this turbotax!

This seems to be a TurboTax issue. Both of my returns are denied because of an incorrect EIN which I know for a fact is correct. Please fix it.
