We'll help you get started or pick up where you left off.

My income for 2024 in the state of NY was roughly $6,000. I have no outside income. My state return is listing starting income as $12,874. Where is this coming from?

This is on the review my state return screen. There were no additional incomes reported so I do not know where the extra income is being reported from. This is leading to a return where I owe hundreds of dollars that I do not have as a college student. Please help.

It sounds like you may have entered a duplicate Form W-2.  Go back to your "Wages & Income" section of Turbo Tax, under "Wages and Salaries," and review your W-2  entries to make sure they are correct or that you did not enter a duplicate Form W-2.

You can also try deleting your Form W-2 and reentering it if the problem persists.

You will be able to edit your W-2 entries if necessary as follows:

If you are using TurboTax Online/Mobile: you can use this link W-2or you can:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Go to "wages and income"
  3. Under W-2's select "Add/Edit" next to your W-2 that you need to edit.

If you are using TurboTax Desktop:

  1. 1. Open your return
  2. 2. In the Search bar, enter "W-2" and select the "Jump to" link. This will take you to your W-2 entries
  3. 3. Select the (down) caret next to your W-2 and then select "Edit"

You could also try previewing your tax return to see where the additional income is reported.

You can get to your tax return in TurboTax desktop as follows:

  1. Switch to Forms Mode, and then
  2. Scroll through your forms in the left panel and
  3. Click on the form you want to preview (Example Form 1040 or your IT 201 NY Return))

You can get to your Tax Return in TurboTax Online as follows:

  1. Go to "Tax Tools" in your left panel,
  2. Select "Tools" and then
  3. Select "View Tax Summary" and
  4. Select "Preview Form 1040"
