My emancipated daughter (DOB 5/27/98) lived with me in 2016 and earned less than $2,000 working. She did not attend school. Can I still claim her as my dependent?

You can claim her as a dependent, as long as you meet the requirements under the rules for claiming a qualifying relative. Those rules are listed below.

  • She must not be the “qualifying child” of another taxpayer or your “qualifying child”.
  • Gross Income: Dependent earns less than $4,050 in 2016.
  • Total Support: You provide more than half of the total support for the year.
  • Member of Household or Relationship: The person (a friend, girlfriend, non blood relative) must live with you all year as a member of your household or be one of the relatives that doesn’t have to live with you.

Please view the Turbo Tax Blog page below for more information about the rules for claiming dependents.
