My child is serving a mission for our church. When asked how many months he lived with us, how do I properly answer this? Is it similar to being away for college?

My child is serving a two year mission for our church. Can I say he lived with us the whole year just as I would if he were away on temporary circumstances such as illness, education, business, vacation, or military service?

If he is age 21, does this disqualify him because he is not currently attending college?

Yes, this is same as if they were away at school as long as the intent is for him to come back to live with you.

If his income in under $4,150 you can still claim them as a dependent.  It may be slightly different in the credits you can get but they can still be claimed as a dependent if they don't make income.
