I am using Turbo Tax Home & Business Version. I have 2 children - 1 who is 24 and did not live with me at all in 2024. The other is 21 and lived with me for 3 months. When I try to enter how long they lived with me in the prompt no matter what I choose (0 or 3) Turbo Tax automatically enters a 6. I try to toggle back or next and then back and it always reverts to 6 months. This is a bug that needs to be fixed.

The true number of months doesn't matter. What matters is whether or not the child lived with you for more than half the year. TurboTax treats 6 months or less as not more than half the year, and 7 months or more as more than half the year.
Are you trying to claim them as dependents? You say the 24 year old does not live with you. If the 24 year old had more than $5050 of income in 2024, you cannot claim them so take them off your return.
Was the 21 year old a student? If the 21 year old was a full-time student who lived away at college, you call that a "temporary absence" and say they lived with you for the whole year. If the 21 year old was NOT a student in 2024, then the same rule applies--more than $5050 of income means take them off your return because you cannot claim them.
No I am not trying to claim either as a dependent hence why I was entering 0 and 3 respectively for months living with us
If you are not claiming your children as dependents on your tax return, you can remove them from your TurboTax account to avoid any issues.
I too am running into the same issue. It doesn't matter how TurboTax handles it unless it is the correct way. Don't ask for the number of months and then default to 6. That needs to be corrected!

@jra106 The person who began this thread had dependents listed on their return and as it turns out, they should not have even had their children listed. You say you are running into a similar problem. Are you also trying to list children who you no longer claim as dependents?
@xmasbaby0 I am actually having the same issue. My mom who I pay more than half her support, lived with me for 3 months in 2024 then lived in a condo I pay for. I put 3 months, TT step by step defaults to 6 months, but the weird part is the 'form' for the dependent worksheet, shows '0' months, no matter what I do and put, it shows zero months, but she is being counted as a dependent. Should I delete her and re-add her or is this a bug that is not yet fixed?
The worksheet is for your records only, it does not get sent to the IRS.
If your Form 1040 correctly shows your mom as your dependent, your tax return is correct.
