Military married filing jointly (fed) AND filing separately (state)

I'm in the military and an Arizona resident.  While stationed in New Mexico for the first three months of 2018, my wife and I were married (who up to that point was living in Colorado.)  Shortly after on April 1st we moved to Alabama because I received orders to move.  All of my income is from the military, and my wife was unemployed for the duration of 2018.

As I read it, we can and should file our federal taxes as married filing jointly.  For state taxes, we should file as married filing separately.  I'm planning on filing in Arizona (as I'm still an Arizona resident), and as I read it, my wife doesn't have to file state taxes as she received no income throughout 2018.  Does that sound right?  Is there any reason why she would need to file in Alabama when she didn't receive any income?

suggest just answering the questions in TT as they are posed and trust their approach -that is what you are paying for by using the software and their warrentee offer.

Curious  why would you come to the conclusion to file separately for state purposes? Why not trust TT to figure that out?

This is what TT recommended, but because it's unusual, I'm trying to see if anyone else has had a similar experience.
