"Miles Must be greater than zero" upon Review

TT is taking me through the review portion and it keeps kicking out our 2010 Toyota because it says "Miles must be greater than zero."

This car is now 12 years old with 258K.  It had significant business mileage in 2015 and 2016, but much smaller amounts since then.  Our daughter drives it now, but the title is still in my and my wife's names.  It just so happened that we had no business miles in 2022, but it could conceivably be used for short trips in the future, if I happen to have it that day because it was in the shop or whatever.

I tried going back through vehicle expenses and said that we no longer use it for business purposes (although it is possible we might for short trips around town).  It told me to go through the Section 127 depreciation recapture part of the Less Common Business Expenses.  (That just feels WRONG in our situation, but I thought I would try it).  However, it still gave me this message, so I put it back.

It didn't affect our taxes either way.  So I don't think it's significant.

I guess my questions are:

  • How can I fix this issue?
  • Is this a significant problem, or should I just not worry about it?

See Screen Cap below.

Thanks for your help.

You need to change your total miles driven to 0.  Since you're not claiming any mileage deduction this year, TurboTax (or the IRS) doesn't need any information about your mileage.  That will allow you to keep the car information in your return for possible future use.

Since you were claiming miles in prior years for business, you will need to delete the car from the self-employment section of the TurboTax if you are no longer using the car or planning to use it in 2023. However, if you are planning to continue to use this vehicle in 2023 you may not want to delete it and show some business miles which will clear your filing error.

Follow the steps below to delete the car:

  1. Log into the software and select the blue button Take me to my return
  2. Select Federal from the left sidebar
  3. Then select Income & Expenses from the categories along the top of the software
  4. Scroll down and select Edit next to Self-Employment
  5. Next select Edit next to the self-employed business
  6. Click Continue through the informational summary screens
  7. On the Income and Expenses summary screen, scroll down under Expenses and click Edit/Review next to Vehicle
  8. You'll come to a summary screen of the vehicles you've entered, click Edit next to the vehicle to report the vehicle is no longer used for business, or select the Trash Can Icon/Delete option to the right of Edit to remove the vehicle without reporting it.
  9. On the next screen, at the bottom of the page, you'll see a check box for I stopped using this vehicle in 2017. Check the box and continue through the screens to answer the questions.

@HopeS,

I don't know if I'll use this car in the future for business, but I don't want to close that door yet.

Would it be a solution to shave off 1 or 2 miles from the main vehicle I use and add them to this one?

Thanks, Fred
