I received unemployment benefits, and federal paid taxes on them. It asks me the type of payment (taxable grants, agricultural) none of which apply for basic unempl comp.

My 1099-G lists in box 1 the benefits I received, and box 4 lists the federal taxes I paid concurrently. There are 6 options Turbo Tax gives me to characterize the "payment type" -- which are all blank boxes on my 1099-G. Nothing referring to Box 1 for what seem to be basic unemployment compensation, or the box 4 for the taxes I paid.

It sounds like you have entered your Form 1099-G under the Other Common Income section of your return rather than in the Unemployment section. You will need to delete it and re-enter it in the correct area.

Follow the directions below to delete form 1099-G.

  • Log in and click take me to my return (unless already in).
  • Click Tax Tools from the left-side menu.
  • Select Tools from the drop-down menu.
  • Click the Delete a Form hyperlink and click delete next to your 1099-G form.

Follow the directions below to re-enter form 1099-G.

  • Click the Federal tab on the left side of the screen.
  • Click to view all income (unless already displayed).
  • Scroll down and click the show more and start link beside Unemployment. (see my screenshot for reference)
  • On the next screen, enter the information from your form 1099-G and click continue.
