With TurboTax Online open, go to "My Info," which should generate "Personal Info Summary." If this screen shows a dependent that you didn't intend to enter, use the trashcan icon on the right to delete that information.
I deleted it but it still won’t let me file unless I put an adoption child’s name
If you do not have an adopted child, and you are not taking the adoption credit, I would attempt to delete Form 8839, Qualified Adoption Expenses.
To Delete Form 8839, Qualified Adoption Expenses for TurboTax Online:
We are getting this same problem. We did not adopt a child this year, and we went to follow these instructions to delete form 8839, but it is not in the list of forms. The system will not let us file at all until we correct the form. The form we don’t need. We can’t efile, we can’t file by mail. We are stuck.
See this thread regarding Turbo Tax asking questions regarding adoption. The last poster, posted a solution that may work for you.
If it doesn't, please contact us so we can further assist you.
Same here, no Form 8839 in sight, not adopted or have any expenses / dependents entered to do with this, cannot submit!
It sounds like the software might be picking up on an adopted child from the Personal Information section.
This is where it would come from:
@travellingdan
I went to "Deductions&Credits" - "You and Your Family" - "Adoption Credit", and then deleted all the forms under that.
If you adopted in the past and did not use up the entire credit back then the program will bring up the carryover each and every year going forward until you use up the credit.
