Is there no way to file a Schedule C through TurboTax without paying $100 for the Self-Employed product?

I just want to know what this is going to cost ... preferably before I spend any more time on it.

If you are only entering Schedule C income with no expenses, then Deluxe or higher online version will support that. But if you have expenses for Schedule C or a 1099-MISC with Box 7 filled in, you will need Self-Employed online version. That is the only one that supports both Schedule C income and expenses. Federal Free Edition doesn't support any Schedule C at all.

And you can use these steps to generate your Schedule C (Income only) online:

  • Log into your account and click orange Take me to my return button
  • Type schedule c in the Search box in top right corner
  • Click on jump to schedule c and this should bring you to the Did you have any income and expenses for a business in 2016? screen and you choose Yes there.

Or you can use any of the desktop versions and they will all support Schedule C income and expenses. While you can use any of the desktop products, Home & Business will still provide better experience if you are self-employed. It will give you the extra guidance when it comes to entering all of your self-employment income and expenses, and home office deductions. You can find the desktop versions here https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/compare/desktop/

Are you needing to input expenses for Schedule C or just income? You can do Schedule C income only in Deluxe or higher. But Schedule C Expenses is only supported in Self-Employed online.
