Is it too late to file my state taxes

Are you referring to a 2016 return?   It's not too late to file your state taxes for the current 2016 tax tear or even past years.  However, only the 2016 state return can be prepared online and efiled.

If you owe state taxes due, your state may have a penalty for filing late.   There *may* not be a penalty for filing late if you are due a refund, but that might vary from state to state.   I know that there is no penalty for a Federal return that is filed late if the Federal return was due a refund.

If you plan to efile your state return, you can only do that if your Federal return was efiled and accepted.  If you mailed the Federal return, then you will have to mail the state return.

Do you need to know how to open your return back up to prepare and file a state return?

Here's how to reopen your return after filing the Federal, so you can complete and file a state return:

  • Log in and go to the 2016 Tax Timeline.
  • Scroll to "Some things you can do."
  • Choose "Add a state."
  • Once the return is open, you can go to the State Taxes tab to start or complete the state return.  Carefully review it before filing since some of the forms may have updated.
  • Then step through the Review tab.
  • Then go to the FILE tab to choose a filing method, pay the fee, etc.
  • If you choose to efile, then make sure that after paying you go all the way to the end and click on "Transmit return now."
  • If you choose to mail the return, then it should offer you a chance to print the return and Filing Instructions after you make that choice.  You have to physically mail the return.  TurboTax does not mail it for you.

NOTE:  Since your Federal return has already been filed, do not make any changes/edits to the Federal return.  If you later need to Amend a return, it has to start off exactly like it was when it was originally filed.
