The Individual Tax Identification Number, or ITIN, allows taxpayers who don't have a Social Security Number (SSN) to file income tax returns. Please click the TurboTax article Who Needs an ITIN or Individual Tax Identification Number? to learn more.

On form 8824 line 8, the program is asking for a related party social security number, the sister states she is not required to provide this because she received cash for the replacement property of our exchange.  We sold one property which she was not involved in and bought a replacement property from her at FMV that we will be keeping for a min. of 2 years.  Her tax consultant has stated she does not have to supply us her ss# because it was a cash deal with her.  She said we are to check "no" under the related party.  If this is true, great, but if not, she is not supplying her ss#, how do I by-pass the ss# field in the program to be able to e-file my taxes?

In a like kind exchange, you have to be exchanging one business property for another.

I'm a little bit curious as to why you say the other party was paid in cash. If you sold property and then purchased other property, that is not an exchange.

If the transaction involved real estate, it must handled by an intermediary. That individual would be responsible to secure the social security number of the related party.

If you cannot get the number, then you will have to mail your return in and hope the IRS doesn't come back to you later and request it.
