Using TT Premier 2023 Desktop on a Mac installed from CD. Working on income in Easy Step mode. Received MO income tax refund in 2023 so TT completed State and Local Income Tax Refund Worksheet. It determined MO income tax refund is not taxable and generated IRS Schedule 1. It also entered 0 on 1040 Line 8.
Switched to Forms mode. State and Local Income Tax Refund Worksheet appears in forms list. IRS Schedule 1 does not. However, IRS Schedule 1 appears in drop down when I click Open Form icon. I select it – it has 0 on Line 1 for state income taxes and 0 on Line 10. Don’t understand why IRS Schedule 1 that applies to my tax return does not appear in forms list when other forms appear that do not apply to my tax return.
When I print or preview forms to be sent to IRS and MO, the State and Local Income Tax Refund Worksheet is included. IRS Schedule 1 is not. Was told by TT that IRS Schedule 1 is not sent if there is no taxable income listed. If that is correct, seems the worksheet should not be sent either since some research indicates not to send worksheets to the IRS. Any insight?

The worksheets are not sent to the IRS when you e-file. And if you file by mail, you can control which pages you are mailing. You can choose to file by mail, and only the tax forms required by the IRS will print out for you to mail.
Hi - thanks much. Still confused as to why the worksheet appears when previewing forms to be sent if TT does not send them when e-filing. Do you know if Schediule 1 is not required by the IRS if lines 1 and 10 are 0. I cannot find any info in this.
If any schedule has no information on it then it is not sent to the IRS in an efile. The worksheets are for your own copy to save for your reference.
Hi – thanks so much for the response. Sorry to recap, but to make sure I understand.
TT completed the “State and Local Income Tax Refund Worksheet” and determined that no portion of my state refund received in 2023 is taxable income. So....TT generated Schedule 1 with 0 on line 1 and 0 on Line 10. TT must not be considering the zeroes as information because according to the Preview function that is part of the desktop cd version, Schedule 1 will not be transmitted with my e-filed fed & state returns. Did I get this right?
Re worksheets – I am itemizing and have worksheets marked “Keep for Your Records” that TT is not sending in the e-file. The “State and Local Income Tax Refund Worksheet” is different in that it is the only worksheet that does not have “Keep for Your Records”. According to the Preview function, the “State and Local Income Tax Refund Worksheet” is the only "worksheet" that is going to be transmitted with my e-filed returns. Does TT not consider this a true worksheet because it does not have “Keep for Your Records” and, therefore, is going to transmit it?
Yes, I think you have it right. There are a couple of places on Form 1040 where information is reported from Schedule 1. These will all be zeroes. Typically, if there is nothing being reported on a form, it is not included as part of your return.
As for worksheets, only government worksheets may be transmitted and included as part of your return. The top of the State and Local Income Tax Refund Worksheet that I'm seeing does have 'keep for your records' at the top of the page. I do not know why it is being included when you show a print preview of all forms being filed with your return. However, if it is being sent, there should be no issues because it would be ignored since it is not an actual tax form.
Hi - thanks.
You mentioned the top of the State and Local Income Tax Refund Worksheet that you are seeing does have 'keep for your records' at the top of the page." The one I view and print does not have "keep for your records. What version of TT are you using? I am in Forms mode, desktop version of TT Premier loaded from the CD for Windows and Mac. I'm on a Mac. Curious as to why we are not seeing the same thing.
Open your Turbo Tax Program and go to forms mode and select a few of your forms, Once your form appears in the right hand screen, look under its heading. In small letters, it will inform you to keep for your records. This is especially true for any worksheet (wks) that appear in your return.
Hi - thanks.
My "State and Local Income Tax Refund Worksheet" does not have "Keep for your Records". Other worksheets do.
I checked my forms in my mock return and it did show Keep for Your Records. Here is a screenshot of the worksheet.
Well this is certainly interesting. My worksheet is totally different. Mine says Schedule 1 Line 1. The title is "State and Local Income Tax Refund Worksheet". There is no "Keep for Your Records" under the title at the top. Instead below the title is "State and local taxes paid in 2023 or prior years and refunded in 2023".
The body is totally different. My worksheet is used to determine what amount of my 2023 state income tax refund, if any, is taxable and puts that value on Line 1 of Schedule 1. In my case, this is 0. TT is not sending the Schedule 1 to the IRS, supposedly because of the 0 value. It will be sending the worksheet instead which I do not if it should be not. Your worksheet is for an entirely different situation.
How do I go about figuring this out?
That is just a Turbo Tax detail worksheet as backup to Schedule 1. Don't worry about it.
OK _ but why would it send the backup data only w/o the form (Schedule 1) it backing up"?
