@rgmhtt The 5 digit PIN in the File section of the program can be any 5 digits you select. The 5 digit PIN can be changed each tax year if desired. The IRS needs your 2023 AGI for tax return owner verification. And now that you have an IP PIN that is also required by the IRS.
To enter, edit or delete a 6 digit IP PIN
Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
Click on Other Tax Situations
Scroll down to Other Return Info
On Identity Protection PIN, click the start button
I think you are answering this question for users of the online TurboTax. I am using the Windows Home&Business product.
I am NOT finding any of the pulldowns you are talking about there.
OK, I have found this Other section in the step-by-step, and it HAS my IRS 6-digit number.
Yet, when I go through the e-file, it is asking for a 5-digit PIN and seems to be using that.
2 different Pins - the 5 digit one is pin you assign which is used by TT for e-file. The 6 digit one is optional Identity protection Pin assigned by the IRS and this changes every year. It's optional to have the IRS Pin but if you have a pin assigned it needs to be on your return and needs to be the current one for this year, or your return will reject - you can check at https://www.irs.gov/your-account
OK, we will see how this goes. I have double/triple checked my IRS PIN.
I have changed my E-File PIN to something that does not look like my IRS PIN.
And submitted.
I will see how it goes and report back. Last time it took 30min (on Sat night) for the rejection...
Good news in that the IRS has accepted my return.
I don't believe I changed anything. Just went through the various pages confirming the data.
Again, thank you all.
That did not work for me. I entered my 6 digit IRS code in the other tax situations and the five digit efile number I always use and this didn’t work. TT still says it’s a Pin problem.

Was that a new 6-digit IP PIN that you obtained from the IRS this year? You need a new one every calendar year. So it's actually called a 2025 IP PIN. You can't use one from last year.
Your rejection may or may not be a "PIN problem." The 5-digit efile PIN on the "Signature page" can be any 5 numbers of your choosing, so that shouldn't be the issue. If the 6-digit IP PIN was new and correctly entered for this year, then it could be a 2023 AGI problem.
What is the exact rejection error code and message?
Great suggestion, thank you. I went into IRS.gov/account, signed in, and the PIN number had been changed!! I had to go under Profile and scroll down to find this update. Why don't they use an alert pop up on their site saying something like "Get your UPDATED six digit pin number to file 2024 taxes"? Why such mystery? I now need to wait the 24-28 hours while my erroneous PIN causes me to be rejected again to submit this updated pin. No button to cancel submission. I think TT could go A LONG WAY to ask people to check their IRS site for an updated PIN rather than all this confusion. Your input has been the best so far. I tried calling customer service at TT and they were not helpful but wanted me to let them see my computer!! AWFUL idea in this age of cyber hacking! While customer service was coming up with no ideas, I read your reply, went to IRS.gov and found the different pin. I HOPE IT WORKS.

You're welcome. I'm glad you were able to get your new 2025 IP PIN. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you.
IRS accepted my submission back on Sunday, the 6th at 1:30ish.
I am not surprised I have not heard back yet. I got a used EV in '24 and had to report the $4000 credit the dealer took and I installed a charging station so applied for that credit as well.
BTW, form 8911 is a PITA. The IRS has to know, by census tract where eligibility is. But no, there are these notices you have to decipher. Fortunately a CPA in the community looked up my census tract and worked out that I am eligible. Now to await IRS agreeing!
So, at this point no news is good news wrt the PIN. I passed that barrier.
Also, for 8911, as it is by census tract and there are TWO web sites to take your address and report back census tract, one would think this is a direct lookup function. TT should have been able to fill out all of 8911 for me after I supplied the installation costs and such.
But where do I enter my 6 digit PIN in Turbo Tax?
Here are two ways to navigate to the section to enter the 6 digit IP PIN:
Or another way:
