When you requested your extension you were supposed to pay your estimated tax due. Did you enter the payment you made into your tax return? Go to Federal>Deductions and Credits>Estimates and Other Taxes Paid>Other Income Taxes
This string indicated that shoudl be a category called other taxes paid - I cannot locate it to include the taxes we paid when we filed for an extension. How can I include that amount on my return?
If your extension payment did not automatically show up on 1040 Schedule 5 line 71 which goes to 1040 line 17 you need to enter it. So make sure it's not already there before you enter it!
You can type estimates paid in the search box at the top of your return and click Find and it will give you a link to Jump To the screen where you enter Extension Payments.
To enter the amount you paid with an extension (including state extension) go to
Federal Taxes (or Personal for desktop H&B version)
Deductions and Credits
Then scroll way down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid
Other Income Taxes - Click the Start or Update button
Next page second section Payments with Extension
Either Visit All or Click Start or Update by the extension you paid
Thank you for your repsonse however, I have two issues here still - I do not have a schedule 5 on my 1040 - so I cannot confirm it. My line 17 only shows the amount withheld.
Somehow too, I have created a 1040 Schedule V that seems to be a voucher indicating I am submitting that monney when I file this return. What am I doing wrong, shouldn’t my return relfect zero since I paid the outstanding balance due when I filed my extension?
Your withholding should be on line 16 not 17. Line 17 should only be the extension payment and any other estimated payments you made. Did you enter the extension payment? Does it show up anywhere else like on line 16?
is the 1040V voucher for the same amount that you already paid? You need to enter the extension payment and make sure any W2 and 1099 withholding is on line 16 not 17.
Click on Add a State to let you back into your retun.
That sounds very wrong. You better call in. The 1040V is not a schedule. It is just the tax due payment voucher. And those other 4 payment slips are 1040ES and are NOT for the tax due. They are quarterly estimated payments for Next Year 2019 so you don't end up owing so much again. They are optional to pay.
Here is what schedule 5 looks like
