If I e-file exactly on October 17 and they get rejected are they then considered to be late

If I e-file exactly on October 17 and they get rejected are they then considered to be late?

it’s looking like I’m not going to be able to get them done until October 17 and plan on E filing for New Jersey and the federal but if it gets rejected is it then considered late?

I also have to file Colorado but I believe if it’s first Filing in Colorado for my  son summer job I will have to snail mail it but I wanted to e-file the others but I am worried that if he gets rejected on the 17th it will then be considered late?
what are the main reasons for being rejected?

thanks

If you e-file on October 17 and the e-file is rejected you have five days to fix it and re-file.   If you do not get it filed by then, it has to be mailed.

Lots of rejections occur for AGI.   If it is rejected for AGI then try using zero instead of the 2020 AGI.

Not quite sure what you mean they get rejected for AGI???? Are you referring to the fact that in order to e-file do you need to provide the prior your AGI are you referring to that or are you referring to the AGI I have on the 2021 - why would he get rejected for that.

I vaguely remember needing a code or knowing the AGI from the year before and how long Is that what you are referring to- I actually might have a problem with that since I did several iterations but I think it tells you which one was actually filed and if it does get rejected how long does it take to get rejected will it be done right away like within a couple hours or is it a couple days? No I will have five days to fix it and the IRS will be aware of that I submitted it but got rejected? Thanks

When you are ready to e-file you will be asked for your 2020 AGI from line 11 of your 2020 Form 1040.   But so many 2020 returns took a long time to be processed that the IRS does not have the 2020 AGI figures in the system to match up to you.  So the "fix" is to use zero instead.

Yes for the prior year 2020 AGI to verify you.  A lot of returns are rejecting for the wrong AGI.   If it does then enter 0 for the AGI to efile.   The IRS took a long time to process 2020 returns and the AGI didn't get entered into the right database in time.

So Should I try to put in my AGI from last year 2020 because I filed an extension I think So I guess it wasn’t submitted till October so if it was submitted later because I filed an extension and right now it’s looking like I’m not gonna be filing until October 17 and I’m afraid for it to get rejected I wanted to try to use the AGI if that’s what they say but are you recommending that I just use zero???

FIRST  .... do NOT wait until the last minute to file.  The efile system backs up and glitches every year so if you owe taxes it is important that you file timely.  If you are getting a refund tomorrows deadline is immaterial.

Next,  if your efile is rejected you have 5 days (10/22/22)  to fix it and resubmit or mail it in with a copy of the rejection notice.  NOTE ... if needed you can force a rejection by simply putting in an incorrect birth YEAR for yourself.  This will give you an extra 5 days to file.

I have to research information and so it’s already Sunday and tomorrow the taxes are due I had them done back in April but was waiting for information from my children’s father. My son is getting dropped from healthcare insurance in January and I’m trying to figure out if he files as independent can he still go on a parents plan as their dependent for healthcare purposes. He was on New Jersey family care through his father and they got dropped and I’m on Medicare but I have an old employer plan that’s insanely expensive that I cannot be part of since I’m on Medicare but he might be eligible but I don’t know if he can be independent on taxes and that’s what he was going to file as…. i’m trying to find an answer to that question and so I don’t know whether to file him as independent or dependent we were going to file independent so he could apply for New Jersey family care on his own but it looks like his income is too high do you happen to know the answer to this question?
can you say don’t wait to the last minute but it already is the last minute and I don’t know how to file for him. And of course I have to file my own I don’t have to file but I’m planning on it but I’m trying to figure out if my son should be independent he qualifies to be independent and that’s complicated as well or if he hast to be dependent for getting on a parents healthcare benefits…. and are you saying that I should buy five more days by putting in something wrong for it to get rejected? I would rather get the answer to the question and get the taxes done with and it looks like he’s getting a refund but that’s only because I’ve been paying estimated taxes and paid back in April

Entering the certainly  wrong AGI, (NOT ZERO) today or tomorrow is a sneaky way to buy yourself some more time to complete your tax return.

If e-File shuts down at midnight, there is no grace period to correct REJECTED and re-submit.

That's not going to happen.

If I e-file exactly on October 17 and they get rejected are they then considered to be late

Anyone who efiles today and is rejected has 5 days to fix and resubmit the return.  NEW tax filings will not be permitted.
