If I am married filing separately, why does it keep asking me questions that begin with Did you or your spouse receive....?

This is under the income section.  We are separated, but have no legal agreement.  I accidentally clicked yes when it asked if either of us received social security benefits, but I didn't; he did.  I don't know how to delete it or what to do but I don't want his social security benefits on my separate tax return.

Are you in a community property state?

If I am filing a separate return why do I have to list my spouse’s information on my return?

Even if you file separate returns (the worst way to file) you each have to list each other's SSN's and some other information on your own tax return.  The IRS can then cross check to make sure you are not "double dipping" for itemized deductions, dependents, etc.

If you are in a community property state, there is more information that will be needed.

Community property states:  AZ, CA, ID, LA, NV, NM, TX, WA, WI

"Not community property state

Hi, I couldn't figure out how to go back to my question to respond to you.  I don't live in a community property state, so I don't know what to do about my (estranged) husband's info being on my return.  Specifically, I checked yes to receiving social security, but I don't get it...he does.  Any advice?

Thanks so much!"

Are you using the same account and user ID that was used for past returns that were joint returns?   it is very messy and hard to remove the spouse data from an account.  You should use a new account and different user ID so that the spouse "stuff" does not keep creeping in to your return.
