I was divorced in January of 2021. I sold my house and moved in August of 2021 with a roommate. Can I file head of household this year?

I paid 100% of household expenses up until August, at which point household expenses were split 50/50.  I have 2 dependents.

Yes, it sounds like you would qualify to use Head of Household status. Here are the requirements:

  • You must be unmarried.
  • You must be able to claim at least one dependent.
  • That dependent must reside at the same residence for more than half the year.
  • You must provide more than half of the cost of keeping up the home where your dependent lives.

Am I Head of Household?

If you qualify as Head of Household, when you enter your marital status (single or married filing separately) into MyInfo, and then enter your qualifying dependent, TurboTax will offer HOH as your filing status.

Thank you!  Do you know if my room mate will also be able to file head of household for 2021?  They are in the exact same situation.  Has 1 dependent, was divorced in January.  And then we split the household expenses 50/50 starting in August.  I am assuming for 2022, only one of us will be able to file head of household.  Is that correct?

Since you are just roommates, and you are splitting the cost of the bills 50/50, assuming you are providing for your own children (you are buying your kids clothes, they are buying their kids clothes) then you would be two separate homes for tax purposes. You both could claim head of household in this situation.

If one of you is providing the majority of support for everyone, then only that person could claim head of household.
