TurboTax has 2 free products, but it appears you are not in one of
them. By your screen name above it says "Deluxe Edition." If you
are in Deluxe Edition, that is a paid edition. In Deluxe, the
preparation fee is 59.99 for a Federal return and 39.99
for a State return. And an additional 39.99 service fee if you choose
to pay the fees out of the Federal refund (44.99 for California.)
The
regular Free Edition is free for a Federal return but has a 29.99 fee
to prepare a state return. The Free Edition is for filers who can use
Form 1040A or 1040EZ. NOTE: The Absolute Zero
promotion for a free state return in Free Edition expired after March
15. I've left information about the other free product lower down in
this post.
Do you need Deluxe because of a situation in your return, such as Form 1040, itemized deductions, HSA, foreign earned income, additional tax/penalty for an early distribution from a retirement plan, etc.?
If you don't need Deluxe and can file a simple return using Form 1040A or 1040EZ, you can downgrade to regular Free Edition if you haven't already paid or registered. Here's how to downgrade, but as I mentioned above, in regular Free Edition there will be a 29.99 fee for a state return:Still have questions?
