I used TurboTax Premier on line last year (2016 return), but bought the Premier CD to use for the 2017 return. How do I transfer personal data to the current return?

To transfer an Online return to Desktop Mac program see this

And scroll down to the last section Transfer your  Online Return

You can try to get your tax file here

Or You can try to get your tax file by using the How to amend steps.  Just use steps 1-4.

If you can't get or didn't save the .tax2016  file to your computer before online was shut down in Oct or lost it,  there is a way to do it by starting your return in the Online version, transfer into that and then you can switch and continue in the desktop version and you won't have to pay for online.  See this…

Then you should be able to save the .tax2017 file to you computer without paying for it in the online version. Then just OPEN it in your desktop program to continue. Don't transfer or import it!

If you can't get the .tax file from Online, call in and tell them you bought the CD this year.

If you have a copy of your 2016 Online return in .tax2016 data file format, just follow the first set of instructions above.

If you don't, use this workaround:

  1. Go to TurboTax and start a 2017 Online return using the same login you used last year. This will transfer your 2016 data over.
  2. After the screen has loaded, select the Tax Tools drop-down menu in the left-hand column, and then select Tools.
  3. In the pop-up window, select the Save your return to your computer.

Now, open the .tax2017 file (which contains the transferred 2016 info) in TurboTax for Windows:

  1. Open your TurboTax 2017 program.
  2. From the File menu, select Open Tax Return.

  1. Browse to where you saved the .tax2017 file, and then click Open.
