Oh did you buy Deluxe without a state? Where did you buy it? Deluxe comes 2 ways, one with a free state and Deluxe without a state for states that don't have an income tax. You have to check the box or online close. It should say....Federal+Efile+State.
So yes you had to buy a state PROGRAM download, sorry. Then each state return is $25 ($20 before March 1) to efile or you can print and mail state for free..
It sounds like you purchased the CD/download for a federal return in a version that did not include state software. Some retailers sell Deluxe with and without the state program---you have to pay attention to what you are buying. There are some states without a state income tax so there are folks who purchase the software for federal only. If you purchased it without a state program, it is an extra $45 to download the software for the state, and there is always an extra fee to e-file the state. You can avoid that state e-file fee if you print and mail the state instead.

Thanks, but I did pay attention to what I was buying. There was a change in my state's free file this year, so because I had some savings bond interest, I had to pay the extra $45 plus $25 for the state efile. Just saying the total price of about $130 is a bit much.
Nothing has changed this year. In the Desktop program it is free to print and mail the state return. There has always been a $25 fee (20 before March 1) to efile state. If you want to have the $25 fee deducted from your federal refund it is $40 (45 in California) Refund Processing Service charge. OR you can pay the fee with a credit card to avoid the extra charge.
You have to be careful what you click on when you file, go slowly. There is one screen that can trip you up. People get going to fast and click the bottom right button to continue. But to pay by credit card you need to check the Left button.
