I owed CA state taxes. When I filed my refund using Turbo Tax it was supposed to be automatically withdrawn from my bank account, but didn't. Does this sound normal?

I received a statement from FTB today stating I owe still. I was under the assumption that since I agreed to have the funds withdrawn from my bank account, they would have been deducted.

You must pay your state tax due using the state’s preferred method of receiving payment.  For most states that will be by making a payment to the state’s own tax website, or by mailing a check or money order.

How do I review the method I chose to pay my federal/state income tax with, after filing with TurboTax Online?

You can verify the tax payment method you chose on the Electronic Filing Instructions for your 2021  Federal or state Tax Return page, next to Balance Due/Refund. To see the page, follow these instructions:

  1. Open your return if it’s not already open.
  2. On the [Your name], your 2021  federal return was accepted! screen, scroll down and select Add a State (don’t worry, we’re not adding a state) to access your tax forms and worksheets.
  3. On the left side select Tax Tools then Print Center.
  4. On the TurboTax Print Center screen, select Print, save or preview this year’s return.
  5. On the next TurboTax Print Center screen, select 2021 federal returns and Include government and TurboTax worksheets (optional) then select View or print forms.
  6. The information will be on the first page, Electronic Filing Instructions for your 2021 Federal or State Tax Return next to Balance Due/Refund.

In the future may I suggest you pay the federal (and state if allowed) directly on the fed or state websites ... this way you have the control on the timing and get an instant confirmation of the payment.   https://www.irs.gov/payments

You must have entered the wrong bank info or selected to pay with a check.  I had a California tax due deducted from the bank.  Did you have a federal refund?  Some banks use different routing numbers for deposits and payments.  Better double check the numbers with your bank.

I have had the same bank account for many years and double checked again just in case, but I did input the correct information.

Was the CA return successfully efiled ?   If not do so now.   If it was and your DD info is correct thenyou can either  just wait for the state to send you a bill for the unpaid balance due  OR you can pay it now.   Keep the record of the successful efiling and the payment request to defend against a late payment penalty.
