I never changed anything on my taxes, been at my job for 2 years 6 months and they recently removed my federal income tax. And I’m just finding out. What do I do?

I never changed anything on my taxes and looking back they changed my deductible to 30,000 yet I have Zero children and I personally never made any changes and they don’t have any physical paperwork stating I needed a change. The person who worked Payroll/HR quit last year and now I owe 2.9k

You have to pay what you owe. On the bright side, you have been given more money with each pay check. Be sure that your withholding is corrected going forward.

Complete a new W-4 for your employer and make sure they are taking tax out of your paychecks going forward.  Since this is nearly halfway into 2023, you might even want to use the line on the W-4   (step 4 line c)   that will ask them to withhold an extra amount from each paycheck so that you will not owe next year.

If you have federal tax due you can pay by mailing your payment with the 1040V voucher, (which has the address printed on it, having the payment taken out of a designated bank account, or you can pay directly on the IRS website.

You must pay your state tax due using the state’s preferred method of receiving payment.  For most states that will be by making a payment to the state’s own tax website, or by mailing a check or money order.

What happened is the W-4 withholding system changed about 4 years ago so the employer may have been on the old system  and then when the new payroll person came on they changed the company to the new withholding system ... what you need to do is fill in a new W-4 form and if you are married your spouse should also.

Use the Tax Withholding Estimator on the IRS web site to figure out what you and your spouse  should each put on the W-4 forms that you give to your employers. It's much easier than using the worksheets on the form. It will let you adjust your withholding to get the approximate refund amount that you want.

nothings changed in the last 3 years of me working at this company. When I started 2 1/2 years ago my federal taxes had been taken out up until March of last year. I didn’t change anything on my end. It was the lady from HR/PayRoll who quit, she changed a bunch of peoples info without consent. I struggled financially last year so I don’t know why justifying receiving more money each paycheck when I actually didn’t. I was scammed by this lady and now I have to owe when I already am financially struggling. Going from making $45,000 one year to barely $28,000 was drastic and so is owing money when the first year of me working I didn’t owe and it’s all due to the lady who changed things without consent before she quit.

@psylok1 Sadly, if no tax was withheld and you owe, then you will need to pay the amount owed, regardless of whose "fault" it was that no tax was withheld.     It does seem off that you say you made about $28,000 and owe nearly $3000, however.    If you are single and earned about $28,000, your federal tax due should be about  $1600---not the $2.9K you mentioned.   Are you sure you entered the information from your W-2 correctly?  Better check it all carefully.   Or do you also owe the state?   Was no state income tax withheld either?
