Doesn't matter.  You have to print and mail 2017.  You can efile or mail 2018.  Did you finish 2017 using the Desktop program or do you still need to prepare them?

I still need to get the "2017 home & business" desktop software and prepare.... Then I will need to get the "2018 Home & business" desktop software and prepare. If I do 2017 first, will I still pay full price for the 2018 software?

I file jointly with my wife... she gets W2's (employed) and I get 1099-MISC's (self employed - lawn care)... I do not have a Tax ID... I use my SS# which, I guess, makes me a sole-proprietor. Are you saying that I can use the Deluxe version to file or do I need to use the one that specifically says "sole-proprietor"?

Yes you can use Desktop Deluxe to enter self employment income if you know how to fill out schedule C.  You can buy Deluxe and later upgrade it to Home & Business if you want to.  And if you get stuck you can always ask us here.

Yes each year is separate.  But if you know what you need to enter you can buy a lower version like Deluxe.  All the Desktop programs have the same forms.  You just get more help and guidance in the higher versions.

There's no law or rule that says you have to file your 2017 return before you can do your 2018 return.

However, it's best to prepare your 2017 return first, if possible. This gives you several advantages:

  • You'll be able transfer your 2017 data to your 2018 return, which saves time and prevents data entry errors;
  • You'll have the answers to certain program questions that involve last year's return (and you'll avoid having to amend your return if you answered them incorrectly);
  • You'll be able to use the AGI method to electronically sign your 2018 return so you can e-file it.

If you're not able to file your 2017 return before filing your 2018 taxes, no biggie. Just be sure to review your 2018 return after you've filed 2017. Should your 2018 return need corrections based on info in your 2017 return, you may need to amend.
