Was tax year 2010 a typo? If not, TurboTax only retains online tax returns for the past 7 years, the same retention time frame as the IRS for federal tax returns.
If you actually need the 2020 tax return -
To access your prior year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/
Scroll down to the section Your tax returns & documents. Click on the Year and Click on Download/print return (PDF)
If you used the desktop CD/Download editions installed on your computer, the only copy of your tax data file and any PDF's will be on the computer where the return was created. TurboTax does not store online any returns completed using the desktop editions.
Or go to this IRS website for free federal tax return transcripts - https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript
For a fee of $43 you can get a complete federal tax return from the IRS by completing Form 4506 - http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4506.pdf
TurboTax does not support tax year 2010 only the current and past three tax years.
There would not be any 2010 software downloads available only a possibility of finding a 2010 CD from an online retailer. However, the CD only has the beta software for the year with none of the updates.
It is 2010. I have the turbotax file on my local hard drive, but do not have the 2010 turbotax program to open it. The IRS is asking me to justify something that needs the 2010 1040 and schedule D to prove. I have about 15 days to reply.
So looking to the actual turbotax cd. I guess I can buy one from Ebay?

Try Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/TurboTax-Business-Federal-File-State/dp/B0043T4IQ6
realize that the 2010 cd that you buy is a beta version that probably does not properly reflect the tax laws for that year. the program can not be updated. opening the XXX.tax2010 file with that software may actually change the return so it won't reflect what was filed. there are websites that can take your tax file and produce a copy of the return. we do not vouch for any of them.
you may want to read this thread
TurboTax 2010 will not open your tax file unless the state program for any state return included in that file is also installed on your computer.
Always print a copy of your completed tax return for your records, and review it carefully before e-Filing.
You will need it if you are audited by the IRS, or to amend if a TurboTax update changes your return or for any other reason,
AND, to find your AGI next year.
Since there is no authorized source for 2010 TurboTax software, any copy that you buy now might be worse than a beta version. It could contain viruses, spyware, or other malware.
As fanfare said, if your .tax2010 file contains a state tax return, you will not be able to open it in TurboTax unless the state software is installed. But the state software for 2010 is not available, even from Amazon or eBay. So your only hope is a service such as the one discussed in the thread that Mike9241 referenced.
In the future, always save your tax return as a PDF in addition to saving the TurboTax data file, so you will have a copy that you can view or print. For tax returns more than 7 years old, your own records are the only source.
I don't see anyone posted the link, you could try the TaxPrinter service to convert a .tax file to pdf at
They might be expensive and it is probably not safe to email tax returns back and forth. They are not related to Turbo Tax.
It's not expensive compared to other solutions/costs.
