If Social Security is the Only income that you would be entering a tax return then there is no need for you to file a tax return.

I only have unemployment income through May 2023 and I have mortgage interest and property taxes and a few other minor deductions to claim.  Can the deductions be carried forward to my filing for 2024?

Mortgage interest and property taxes can only be claimed as an itemized deductions.  If the unemployment compensation is your only income in 2023 then those itemized deductions cannot be used since your Standard Deduction will more than likely be greater than any itemized deductions.  They cannot be carried forward to the next tax year.

Since you mentioned mortgage interest--  just so you understand -- entering mortgage interest on a tax return will not get you a tax refund if you did not pay any tax and/or if you do not have enough itemized deductions like mortgage interest, property tax, charity donations, medical expenses, etc to exceed your standard deduction.   Unless any tax was withheld from your unemployment, you would not be able to get a refund.

@MzMelanie14 No.   Your deductions cannot b e carried forward to the next tax year.   You will simply get your standard deduction if you do not have enough itemized deductions to exceed the standard deduction.
