I have filed for years w/ TurboTax. I have a 1099-DIV with very limited dividend income, just a small amount and it won’t let me use the “free edition”. Who can assist ?

TurboTax free claims you can use it to file a simple tax return and that “limited” dividend income is accepted under this situation. Still, it’s making me want to pay to file when I have been using the free edition for years. I’m hoping someone can look into my situation and help me out. I have only a W-2 form and that 1099-DIV as stated. I feel I should be able to use the free edition and not have to pay $130 to file my simple tax return.

On your 1099-DIV, are the total ordinary dividends (box 1a) more than $1,500?

Does your 1099-DIV have Section 199A dividends in box 5?

Either of those situations requires a form that is not included in TurboTax Free Edition.

If your 2022 Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) is $73,000 or less you might be able to file for free using IRS Free File.

- My box (1a) total is less than $200 (I rounded up as to not give specific numbers) 

- I have $0 in box 5 (nothing in box 5).

I truly feel as if I fall under the category of a simple tax return, but I’ve had trouble chatting with an agent (not necessarily a tax preparer agent but even just a customer service rep)

If you are being prompted to upgrade to TurboTax Deluxe, the system is detecting that your tax situation requires additional forms or schedules that are not covered in the free edition. Please see Why do I have to upgrade from Free Edition? for more information. 

After reviewing the above and you feel your situation still meets the requirements for TurboTax Free Edition, you can switch back by using clear and start over to erase your current return and start from scratch. You can start over as long as you have not registered the product, submitted payment, or deducted your TurboTax fee from your refund.
