Sorry that is one of the major differences between Online and Desktop program. In the online versions you have to use a higher version to enter items. Like you need Premier to enter a K-1. And you don't get a free state. State is an extra charge.
Online you pay to prepare the return whether you efile or print and mail. Efiling is free and included in all versions. And state is a separate additional charge in Deluxe and above. Oh and Online is only good for 1 Account and 1 return.
In the Online versions you have to use a higher versions to enter certain types of income like investments and self employment. Online you can’t see the actual forms like the Desktop program until you pay.
If you used the Desktop program before you may notice several differences and not like the online version. It has less features and no Forms Mode. You can only do 1 return. Your return is only saved online so be sure to save both the .tax2020 data file and the pdf file to your computer when you are done. In case you need to amend in the future or if you need a copy to get a loan or something. You might not be able to access your online return when you need a copy.
Thanks for your reply. Rather appalling there’s such disparity between similarly named products. No good reason for it. I did end up speaking someone today who gave me more information. I will have to complete my return during weekday work hours so I can call again if need be. Turns out my 2013 iMac is running iOS 10.15 which is one version more recent for even the 2020 tax program much less than last year’s. It should have worked. Not sure what I’ll do next year. Buying it from TT directly is significantly more $ than from Amazon. Big surprise.
macOS version 10.15 definitely supports the current 2020 version of turbotax for desktop. The problem would be that you are using the online program. The online program is “free to start“ and you only pay when you finish and file your return, so at this point if you are using TurboTax online, you should not have paid for anything yet. You can purchase a download of the desktop program from Amazon, Staples, Best Buy, or direct from TurboTax.
I’m not sure what you’re going to get if you file during the day. I have never heard that the customer service will give you premier functionality online for the deluxe price. Maybe that’s a customer service exception that they are willing to offer you.
turboTax desktop usually supports the current Mac version and one prior version, so I would expect that next year‘s 2021 Turbotax would support Big Sur but would still support Catalina 10.15. Although that would be subject to change until the version support is officially announced.
I am stuck using the online version (which I loathe) because the download version I bought from Amazon would not install on my 2013 iMac, despite meeting system requirements and that had sufficed for for several years prior. TT support couldn’t help back in April when I discovered the problem. Subsequently I discovered a number of review postings on Amazon by other owners of “older” Macs who had identical install issues. No one seems to know the what the problem is. I couldn’t get a refund from Amazon and the best TT could offer was a code to use the web version. I’ve used TT for well over 20 years. TT software for TY 2021 is currently available on TT’s website and system requirement is Mac OS 10.14. My iMac is running 10.15 (Catalina). Who knows whether it will run for me next year. Right now I need to finish my 2019 taxes. This whole kerfuffle is so very unsatisfactory and wildly disappointing.
Just checking to make sure you know that Turbotax online can only prepare a 2020 return, if you need to prepare a 2019 return, you have to use the desktop version.
I've never heard of problems installing Turbotax 2020 on 10.15, but maybe @macuser_22 has heard of it. I know that the first few versions would not run properly on Big Sur (which was just released in November 2020 at the same time as the initial version of Turbotax 2020), but I'm not aware of problems with Catalina (10.15).
It installs and works fine on 10.15 - no problems that I have heard of.
if you get the message "TurboTax cannot be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software" then that is caused by the Apple "Gatekeeper" introduced with OS X 10.15 (Catalina).
That has nothing to do with TurboTax and will happen for any application not purchased from the Apple Store.
See this Apple article on this: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202491
And this TurboTax help article: https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/troubleshooting/help/turbotax-for-mac-won-t-open-when-installed/00...
For older Mac systems when TurboTax will not open.
See:
Be sure that System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> General -> Allow apps downloaded from App Store and identified developers is checked.
Go to the Applications folder and select the TurboTax application in the Finder and right click with the mouse (or control click) ans select the top "open". That should force the first open. After that it should open normally.

And when all else fails, totally uninstall and reinstall. The original install might have corrupted a support file. Also try switching user accounts and install under a different user. If it works with a different user then there is an internal problem with the first user account on the Mac.
Corruption could have occurred in the Application or in an associated preference or support file.
The best remedy is to totally uninstall TurboTax and all associate files and then re-install. That will not delete or change any .tax2020 data file that had already been created with the tax data.
To uninstall the application and all associated files need to be deleted and then the application reinstalled. If there was a state then the state must also be reinstalled.
To remove TurboTax from your computer, you'll need administrative rights.

Thanks everyone for your contributions. At this point I’m done fiddling with it. Hours I’ve spent on it could have been spent finishing my return. I will complete it reluctantly with the web version of Premier as I have no choice and hope the service code will cover the additional cost for that plus my state return. I will cross any issues with TT2021 next year. My final point is that it isn’t unreasonable for anyone to believe that what you get for TT Deluxe software should be equivalent to TT Deluxe Web. And it most certainly isn’t. There’s no reason why it can’t be.
