Are you a W-2 employee?   Did the employer add them to box 1 of your W-2?   Or did the employer issue something else to you for the commissions?   Ask your employer how your commssions were reported.

The way you enter this will depend on how you received the commissions.

  • If you worked for an individual or a company, you may get a W-2.
    • This will have the commissions shown as wages
    • And Social Security and Medicare taxes will be taken out.

If you haven’t started your tax return, you should complete the menu questions before you proceed.

From that point you will select [Tax Home] from the tool bar.  This will bring up a list of data entry topics.

  1. To Post a W-2.
  2. Select Wages & Income
  3. Click on Review Edit
  4. Select Job (W-2) [Edit/Add]
  5. You can change existing entries with the [Review] button.
  6. You can Add a W-2 by selecting the person that the W-2 is for, from the bottom of the list.
  7. [+ Add a W-2 for XXXX]

If you’ve already posted documents they will appear at the top.  If not select Income and Wages.

  • If you did not get a W-2, and the commissions were paid directly to you:
    • You are self-employed.
    • You will report this as self-employment income.
      • You may get a 1099-MISC
      • or a 1099-Nec
      • Or possibly nothing at all
    • Regardless.it should be included in your income

Once you've opened TurboTax:

  1. Go to Wages & Income
  2. Click Work on other Income
  3. Select Self-employment Income
  4. The screen Your 2023 self-employed work summary will come up
  5. The interview will lead you through the posting.
