amount you paid with request for extension of time to file goes on the 1040 line for that.
amount you paid after that is part or all of "amount you owe" and does not go on your Form 1040.
When you requested your extension you were supposed to pay your estimated tax due. Did you enter the payment you made into your tax return? Go to Federal>Deductions and Credits>Estimates and Other Taxes Paid>Other Income Taxes
Thanks. Where do I mention that amount I paid for year 2021 after the April 15 deadline? Does it go in the next year's tax return?
If you are preparing a 2021 tax return then all of your 2021 information goes on that 2021 return. You do not enter 2021 information on a 2022 return.
When you requested your extension for the 2021 return you were supposed to pay your estimated tax due. Did you enter the payment you made into your tax return? Go to Federal>Deductions and Credits>Estimates and Other Taxes Paid>Other Income Taxes
I did not pay my estimated tax due when I requested extension for the year 2021. I paid the tax owed to IRS using the pay1040.com website after April 15th, starting in May 2022. Now I am filing my 1040 tax return for the year 2021 to be completed before Oct 15th.
How do I handle all this?
Did you pay the same amount that's due on your 1040 tax return? When you file just say you will mail a check then don't. It will meet up with your payment.
I did not pay the full amount. I was thinking of filing whatever remaining amount when filing my return on Oct 15th.
Should I just pay total tax owed - the tax already paid when filing on Oct 15th? Will they reconcile that?
In the program ... ONLY enter what you paid with the extension. Then subtract any payments made after that from the balance due on the return and send only that amount still due. The IRS will marry up all the payments made to the return automatically.
Turbotax does NOT allow me to enter the amount that I want to pay with the tax return? Looks like if I opt for direct debit , it debits the full amount and does NOT allow me to enter the value ( which is total tax owed to IRS minus the tax paid since April 18 2022).
Ok ... the final balance due should NOT include what you already paid with the extension ... so let's get that fixed.
If your extension payment did not automatically show up on 1040 you need to enter it. So make sure it's not already there before you enter it!
For 2021 Federal Extension payments should be on schedule 3 line 10. And go to 1040 line 31.
You can type estimates paid in the search box at the top of your return and click Find and it will give you a link to Jump To the screen where you enter Extension Payments.
To enter the amount you paid with an extension (including state extension) go to
Federal Taxes (or Personal for desktop H&B version)
Deductions and Credits
Then scroll way down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid
Other Income Taxes - Click the Start or Update button
Next page second section Payments with Extension
Either Visit All or Click Start or Update by the extension you paid
I did not pay anything with the extension.
I paid after ( During May to July 2020 using pay1040.com website) the extension is sent and approved. In one of the earlier replies someone mentioned , I just have to pay the remaining balance now but remaining balance cannot be mentioned in the payment screen.!
Ok then. When you file select you will mail a check. Then just pay the remaining amount, (subtract what you already paid from the tax due). Here is a blank 1040V payment voucher

Or Pay the IRS directly at
The IRS knows what you paid and when you paid it ... simply pay what you still owe after the other payments have been made. It doesn't have to be listed on the tax return.
