I entered paid family leave benefits, but turbo tax also entered it as unemployment income exclusion, am I double counting the benefit income?

Where do you see unemployment income exclusion?  Are you using a 2020 desktop version of TurboTax or are you filing your 2021 return?

The Unemployment Income Exclusion was a tax break for 2020 that has not been extended to 2021.  It would not be double counting benefits, it was removing it from your taxable income.

It was located in the app and computer online filing for 2021, not a desktop version.

Unemployment and Family Leave paid through the state are entered in the same spot in TurboTax.

Is this what you are seeing?

The amount should not double.

Please tell us if there is more to the story.

What makes you think the amount is being doubled?

It seemed like my California refund was cut it half once I entered the income.

I see.

I think the TurboTax program does not know if it's unemployment OR family leave, since they are reported the same (on a 1099-G) so that screen lists the amount as both. Because as far as the program knows, it could be either one.

Please look at your Federal 1040 to see what the program has added as income.

 TO CHECK IN TURBOTAX ONLINE:

Click "Tax Tools" on the LEFT SIDE BAR then click "Tools" that open below

Click "View Tax Summary" on the screen

Click "Preview my 1040" which now appears on the LEFT SIDE BAR

Scroll through the 1040 and check out the income reported.

Please look at your 1040 line 8

Only counted PFL once not twice! Thanks for the support!

I found this threat while googling the same issue as the OP. @KrisD15 while I appreciate your advice on how to check for duplication on form 1040, this leads to the Federal summary only which is not duplicated. However, when I click on "CA Tax Summary", the amount is being duplicated. That's because the question OP (and I) were asked to answer is located in the State section.

It seems that the following question has to be answered as "0":

After which the following summary populates without duplication, labelling amounts previously entered in the Federal income section via form 1099G as "unemployment income"

DELETE2.PNG

All previous references elsewhere in the software are to "unemployment income OR PFL" ; however, in the State section, the addition of the PFL specific question in the previous screenshot creates confusion that leads to duplication. There is no way to edit the "unemployment income exclusion" section, which feeds from forms 1099G.

@korsinik12  In that particular case I think you would have to go back to the federal return and delete the 1099-G and re-enter it so that it will properly carry over to the California return.
