Make sure you don't have any blank boxes (delete those line items if you do).  Box 14 entries have 3 parts and all 3 components need to be entered.

  • The description from your W-2
  • The amount
  • Tax Category Code - if you do not have a code, be sure to select ''Other - code not on list'' from the drop-down menu.  Leaving this box blank is the most common reason for an error on Box 14.

If it all looks correct, you should be able to continue on.  There is a difference between an error preventing you from e-filing and TurboTax asking you to review an entry.  If TurboTax is just asking you to review it, indicate that it is correct and continue through the screens.  If you are doing your final review before filing and you have an error that is preventing you from e-filing, comment with the exact error message if the above does not resolve your issue.

This does not resolve my issue.

My error states that it is a duplicate.

If it is saying there is a duplicate, go back to the Income and Expense section of the Federal section.   Click on "Review" or "Edit/Add" whichever is shown.  Click on the "Edit" button for the W2 in question.  Click through the screens until you get to the Box 14 entry and look to see what is entered.   If you see something that is a duplicate entry, delete the duplicate entry.   If you do not see anything that is duplicated, then I would suggest that you continue through the screens until you are back to the list of W2s.   I would then delete the W2 in question and then re-enter the W2.

I am trying to efile and TT keeps looping me back to the withholding amounts on my 1099R, which are correct.  I can't get past this to efile.

My 1099R only has a box 14, no 14a.  I have no info on it to enter in the description and amount fields  when I click on the + sign.

What is the exact error and which boxes have numbers in them?

I can't cut and paste it - withholding cannot be greater than ... the distribution - which it isn't on the form in TT.

Box 14 has the amount of withholding.

If you are getting an error because your 1099-R has a blank amount for the Box 16 state distribution, but there is state tax withheld in Box 14, you can clear the errors by going back in and editing your 1099-R forms.  On each affected1099-R  form, enter the Box 1 amount in Box 16 for the state distribution.  Doing so will clear errors stating that the state tax withheld is greater than the state distribution amount.
