How do I file for an extension?

Steps on how to use TurboTax Easy Extension :

  1. Click on the Federal Taxes tab
  2. Click on the Other Tax Situations subtab
  3. Scroll down to Other Tax Forms
  4. Select File An Extension

The important thing to remember about extensions is that they only extend your time to file the return.  If you owe money, then the IRS and states expect you to pay by the normal tax deadline -- there's no extension for paying. So if you're filing an extension and you believe you'll owe, then you'll want to mail a check to the IRS or state.

On the other hand, If you normally receive a refund, and you don't anticipate any change, then you don't need to send payment.

In regard to your state return: Some states will piggyback off the federal extension, so there's no additional state form to file.  Other states require you to submit their own extension forms.  TurboTax will walk you thru the state extension as well as the federal process to ensure you follow the requirements of your state.

If you're curious about your particular state, here's a list of extension requirements by state: https://www.irs.com/articles/state-tax-extension-information

How do I file for an extension?

After filing an extension, how do you then go back and complete your taxes and submit them?

How do I file for an extension?

Go back to the exact same account with the exact same user ID you used, and you will probably have to click on Add a State to get back in to the return.  You will not really be adding a state, but that will let you back in to work on your return. Did you enter the payment you made into your tax return?  Go to Federal>Deductions and Credits>Estimates and Other Taxes Paid>Other Income Taxes  This will show up on line 70 of your Form 1040
The very last day to e-file a 2017 return is October 15, 2018.  After that, e-filing for 2017 will close down permanently, and 2017 returns will have to be printed, signed and mailed.  It is recommended that you get it e-filed before that deadline if you can, “just in case” of last minute problems.

How do I file for an extension?

Mass State E-filing seems to have shut down already - only print option is available. Also the system seem to still think it is pre-April 15th
