I am trying to finish my taxes on Turbo Tax Deluxe. When I do the state review I get a notice that there are to many characters in my state ID number. How can I fix this?

It appears that TurboTax is automatically adding the state abbreviation in front of the ID number causing it to be too long.

Each state can have different requirements for ID numbers. Please clarify which state is involved and which screen in TurboTax is causing the issue.

For example: According to the Utah tax agency's website, the State requires a very specific format for the withholding account number:

FYI: Withholding Account Number

The Utah withholding account number is a 14-character number. The first eleven characters are numeric and the last three are “WTH.” Do not enter hyphens. Example: 12345678901WTH.

If form W-2 or 1099 does not include this number, contact the employer or payer to get the correct number to enter on TC-40W, Part 1. Failure to include this number on TC-40W may cause your withholding to be disallowed and delay any refund.

See here for additional information from the Utah State Tax Commission. Check with your employer to verify the number.

What you apparently see, can be corrected by going back to the form itself, and editing out those first two letters.

A two-letter state abbreviation is needed in a separate box, just before the number....but as I say, a separate box .

This kind of entry error can commonly happen if you take a picture of your form to enter it.  IF you do IT IS Critical, that you EDIT the form after entry and Check Every Box  !

(Myself, I would never trust taking a picture to enter any form flawlessly...not even a PDF upload.  Someday the AI will be able to do it flawlessly...but it's too soon)

I am trying to finish my taxes on Turbo Tax Deluxe. When I do the state review I get a notice that there are to many characters in my state ID number. How can I fix this?

Thank you for your response. It is the state of Utah. I have manually entered the W2 information and I have imported the the W2 information. I get the same error message either way.

It is line 15 on the W2. I enter the 2 letter state id in the first box, in the 2nd box I enter the employers state ID number including WTH. It is a total of 14 characters. For whatever reason the program adds the UT to the front of the employers state ID number making the entry on form TC-40W 16 characters long. The program will not let me edit the worksheet titled TC-40 W, which is the sheet that shows up as having the error when I do the review process before filing my taxes. I can't help but wonder if it isn't some sort of programming error.

Thank you for your response. I didn't enter a photo of the W2. I imported it once and then manually entered it with the same result. The error is appearing on form TC-40W. I can't edit that form. I can only edit the actual W2 information. But that creates even more errors.

Personally, I think that it is a programming issue in the software.

Thank you

How are you entering UT?  Are you picking UT out of the drop down list for box 15?   You don't technically "enter" it.

I think I understand what you just said, but try it again this morning.....since software updates were issued overnight.   (if you are actually using desktop software, run the updates first)  Delete the W-2, and put it in again manually....don't import it.

If you try correcting without re-entering the entire W-2 form, make sure you delete everything in that second half of box 15 by hitting the delete and backspace keys...then click in box 16 before clicking back into the box 15 , now empty, number field.  In the past, I've occasionally seen that a correction doesn't "take" until you a)  empty the field.....and b)  then click into another box, before c) coming back to the box where the correction is needed.    And for the number....again we stress to make sure the final three letters are lower case.

I tried entering Utah stuff in boxes 15, 16, 17 for a W-2  this morning on both the Premier Desktop and the Premium Online software, and I didn't see any "UT" get added in front of the number (in the same box)....I only saw the UT in the separate box just before the number.

I even ran thru the full UT Q&A and error check for the UT software (but only with the Online software), and no error was seen, then went back to check actual W-2 and the 11numbers+wth was there by itself.

The only other thing I can think of is if you have some strange autocorrect software turned on.

I appreciate your help. I tried what you suggested and it still hasn't solved the problem. Below are screenshots of the specific area of the issue. I'm open to suggestions.

Thank you very much!

Tried this also. The program changes it back to WTH. Still getting the same error.

I'm thinking it might show capital WTH on the Utah error screen, even if entered lower case on the actual form in the Federal section.

The issue is the "UT" right at the start of that number.

Somehow, you need to go back to the actual form in the Federal area and change the box 15 on that form.

and it's the one that is supposed to start with 122895.....,.  not the one you took a picture of.

Do not try to change it on the UT form itself, nor during the error check,,,,but navigate back on the actual form in the Federal section.

Here's a thought, perhaps the correction in the Federal section isn't actually getting transferred to the State section.

Delete the entire Utah tax return...

........go to the federal section again and retype the problem number (with the lower case wth)...run the federal error check, then go to the state section and restart the UT tax software, and go thru it's entire Q&A again to see what happens.

As @SteamTrain  said, changing it in the step-by-step interview section in your program instead of at the Check Entry may be the clue to resolving it.

Also, do the 4 tax ID's shown in your Check Entry image mean you have 4 W-2's or 1099's with withholding?   If so, you need to use lower case wth on every one that has any UT withholding, including any 1099's with a Utah withholding number, if applicable.   So when you go back, be sure all of them are lower case wth.

...and when you change each box 15 to have a lower case wth ... click in another box, 16 or 17, to make sure the box 15 letters stay lower case.

Work your way out to the main menu after each correction, and then edit that form again to go back and check that box 15 number has the lower case wth.
