I am getting this warning, Form MO-NRI: TP Remote Work Income should not be greater than total Missouri wages entered on your federal return. The numbers are the same.

Verify you have entered a form W2 in the Federal "Wages & Income" that has MO in box 15 with MO income in the corresponding box 16.  Now in the MO state interview in the "Income" section you will be asked about the amount of those MO box 16 wages that are for remote work outside of MO.  The amount you enter should be less than that MO box 16 amount (you mention 80%).  That should work.

DMarkM1 - Thank you for responding to me!!

I think that my mis-understanding may be the root cause.

My Missouri based employer provides me two W-2 documents. One for Illinois and of course, one for Missouri.  They base the values based upon when I physically badge into the building in Missouri. I enter both of these W-2s while doing the federal of course and I've checked them thoroughly.

When doing my MO return, I believe that I'm effectively misinterpreting what remote work is.  To this point, I've been trying to use my Illinois income as the remote portion.   Basically, my mistake is that I shouldn't include the Illinois earnings.   This is very misleading if you consult the MO-NRI instructions, which refer to the values on your Fed 1040.

All of the monies that I earned in MO were done so in a non-remote fashion.  So, essentially, I have NO remote work in MO.  See what I did there? did you chuckle?    So, can you please help me to understand if this new assumption is correct?

Yes 🙂

If you earned 6,000 while physically in Missouri as a Missouri non-resident, and 6,000 is what the employer reported in Box 16, you would not report any of that 6,000 as remote work.

Neither Illinois nor Missouri tax out-of-state remote workers, but both states tax income earned while physically in their state.

Thank you!

I believe that the confusion is related to the MO-NRI document.  https://dor.mo.gov/forms/MO-NRI_2023.pdf

"Part B" points back to your federal return, which is pointing towards your total income.  That is why, I was including the income reported to Illinois.

Hope this might help someone else..

I am getting the same problem.  Boxes 1 and 16 have the same wage amount.  The software will not accept the number on the out of state (Missouri) tax return.

Have you reviewed DMarkM1 response above, "Verify you have entered a form W2 in the Federal "Wages & Income" that has MO in box 15 with MO income in the corresponding box 16.  In the MO state interview, in the "Income" section, you will be asked about the amount of those MO box 16 wages for remote work outside of MO.  You should enter less than that MO box 16 amount (you mention 80%).  That should work."  You must verify that the MO reported amount corresponds with box 16.  Please respond and let us know if this does not fix your problem.
