We both work and reside in 2 different states (Long Distance). Can I file Married Joint for Federal and Married-Separate for my MI state tax? I know NJ allows different status than Federal in this situation but I am not sure about state of Michigan.

For Michigan, go to the TurboTax section and look for the screens below. You must Change Resident status, then you will get the second screen. For New Jersey, you can file separately, but you must follow this link for the instructions (since you already have the TurboTax Desktop this will be easier) https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/using-turbotax/help/how-do-i-prepare-a-joint-federal-return-and-se...
For Michigan, if a joint federal return was filed, the Michigan return must be married filing jointly. However, Michigan will allow you to indicate resident/nonresident for each spouse then only apply the tax to the resident's income or nonresident's Michigan income.
Hi Mary,
Is this possible in the TurboTax desktop version for windows? Will it allow me to mention that my wife is a non-resident? Also, can we do Married-Joint for federal and Michigan and Married-separate for NJ for my wife? Is that an option?
