How do you file an entension

What of I file a extension and it was approved and decided to pay my tax own? When I submit my e-file it said I'm getting a refund for federal and pay for state? Is that because of the extension on my federal that I got approved for? Will have have to pay what I'm getting refund and what I own?

You are correct that you must pay your tax own - the extension if for filing, not for paying. So, you do have to pay state tax that you owe to the state by April 18th, midnight, your local time.

As to the federal, once you filed for an extension, you don't have to do anything, since you are saying that you are getting a refund... just file extension, and when you are ready, file your income tax return and then you will receive your refund.

I already file my federal and state taxes but I was supposed to own both federal and state. So did the extension give the the refund for federal!?

No, the extension does not give anything. All extension means is that you are asking the IRS to send your documents later. If you owe, you will owe regardless if file for an extension or not...

So than why am I getting a refund for federal? Because before I file a extension I own both federal and state. And when I try to go submit it electronically it states that I get a refund for federal? Would this be a mistake? I don't want to get a refund if I'm not supposed to be getting it and get  audit for it later? Just want to confirm.
